Alberta’s top 120 female hockey players will compete at the Team Alberta Challenge in Wetaskiwin from May 14-17, 2009. This will be the second year of the Team Alberta Challenge. It is a new event which has been integrated into the Team Alberta Female program which provides young female athletes an opportunity to experience short-term high intensity competition. “We’re really excited to be hosting a second Team Alberta Challenge. This program has, and will continue to grow to become yet another integral part in shaping these young athletes. Wetaskiwin Minor Hockey did a fabulous job stepping up as host and bringing this event together.” said Jenn Lunn, Coordinator, Team Alberta Female Programs, Hockey Alberta.
The Team Alberta Challenge helps identify the top female players in Alberta. In addition to player evaluations, the competition also acts as a means to evaulate administrators, coaches and trainers looking to secure future positions with the National Women’s U18 Hockey Championship and the Canada Winter Games. The Team Alberta Challenge is the first step in Hockey Alberta’s Team Alberta Development Program and runs every other year off-setting the bi-annual Alberta Winter Games. Beginning in March, over 400 13 and 14-year-old girls tried out at their designated zone camps, each player vying for one of twenty spots on their respective zone team. The six zone teams (Calgary, Northwest, Edmonton, South, Northeast and Central) then travel to the Team Alberta Challenge and compete against each other in a short-term competition. “For hockey fans, this is a very exciting competition and an opportunity to see the up and coming stars in the province,” said Doreen Young, Provincial Coordinator Team Alberta U16.
