Hockey Alberta is proud to announce Cheryl Harwardt as the head coach of Team Alberta along with Wade Borynec and Lara Ruppell as the assistant coaches for Team Alberta which will be taking part in the U18 Women’s National Hockey Championships. The Championships will be held in Surrey, BC from November 4 – 8, 2009. “The coaches that applied for these positions were impressive making the committee’s decision very difficult. We feel, however, Cheryl, Wade and Lara will give Team Alberta the best possible chance for success at the U18 Women’s National Hockey Championships,” said Jenn Lunn, coordinator Team Alberta Female, Hockey Alberta. Harwardt comes to us as Head Coach of the Spruce Grove Timberwolves Female Midget AAA Team. She was an assistant coach for Team Alberta U18 in 2007 and an apprentice coach at the Canada Winter Games in 2007. Harwardt has also spent time as a mentor coach for several of Team Alberta’s U16 programs. “I’m looking forward to working with elite young athletes throughout Alberta to further develop our team skills and the female game. This is an important opportunity to contribute to the long term success of the Hockey Alberta female program,” said Harwardt. Borynec is a mentor coach for the Northwest Hawks for the 2009 Team Alberta Challenge. He also spent several years as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Chimos as well as coached in the Alberta Winter Games Ruppell comes to Team Alberta as an assistant coach of the Sherwood Park Fury Midget AAA female hockey team. Over the past several years she has been involved with Team Alberta as a coach at the Alberta Winter Games and the Team Alberta Challenge. Ruppell is also a past Team Alberta Player. Amy Montgomery will handle the trainer duties for Team Alberta. She started with Hockey Alberta in 2008 as a trainer for the Alberta Cup and the Alberta Winter Games. In the 2008 – 2009 hockey season, Team Alberta finished in seventh place at the Championships in Napanee, Ontario. This year the team is looking to beat their previous standings and bring home a medal. |
