By / Darren Bayrack Hockey Calgary will host its annual charity golf tournament at beautiful Springbanks Links Golf Club on Monday, June 15. The fun-filled day will include 18-holes of championship golf, gifts, lunch, dinner, contests, beverages, silent awards, prizes and more. About 160 golfers are expected to play the scenic course, located 21 minutes west of downtown Calgary, in support of local minor hockey. Rod Whitman, the same man responsible for the renowned Wolf Creek Golf Resort in central Alberta, also designed Springbank Links. The front nine includes the ‘Devil’s Triad’ – holes five through seven – which are guaranteed to challenge golfers of any level. The back nine opens up to allow long hitters to go for broke off the tees, however, there is plenty of water and silica sand bunkers to be wary of. Through its various fundraising initiatives, Hockey Calgary has helped raise $863,000 to benefit 2,314 children during the past 10 years, ensuring fairness and growth in minor hockey. The continued support of golfers and local businesses has made the tournament a long term success and 2009 sponsorship packages begin at $500. Each season Hockey Calgary gives more than 13,000 children a chance to play and compete in the great game of hockey. Dedicated volunteers, member associations and board members work diligently to ensure all kids have the right to play regardless of their financial status.
